Linda Nolen Learning Center Reflection:
There is lots of debate going on in the world of education about the use of technology in the classroom. After spending time at the Linda Nolen Learning Center, I can definitely say that technology is doing wonderful things for students with special needs and that the proper implementation of technology is revolutionizing the ways these students learn. While at the school I saw teachers using technology to help nonverbal students make choices, as well as using technology to scaffold learning for all the students in class. Linda Nolen accepts students with special needs, ranging from physical disabilities to emotional distress, as well as typical students. The use of technology in the classroom engages all different types of learners and helps mainstream achievement in the classroom.
Mr. Crenshaw, an employee of the school, lead the tour around the school and was quick to point out the variety of differentiation that takes place in each classroom. The teachers at the school work to meet every student on whatever level they need to be reached, holding fast to the philosophy that every child is capable of learning. These teachers are equipped with necessary tools including scaffolded resources, technology, patience and a passion for the children.

AMSTI Reflection:
As a student I struggled with having confidence in math and
science. I attended most of elementary school in California while Gov. Davis
was in office. During this time economic mishandling caused for rolling
blackouts within the schools and funds that had been allotted for schools were
withdrawn. I remember as a student and having art class be canceled because the
school no longer had the funds to pay for the supplies. In the same way our
math and science classes suffered because money could not be spent of the
supplies needed to conduct proper investigation in these areas.
AMSTI allows teachers to have the best practices and all of
the materials needed for effective instruction. Math and science can be some of
the most difficult areas for students to grasp, especially if the concepts
remain abstract and students are not allowed to experiment and explore with
them.
My philosophy of teaching states that students learn best
through discovery. AMSTI aligns with my view on experiential education and I
would love to work in a school that had implemented that program.

School Safety
In response to recent conversations regarding safety in schools, our class attended a seminar in which we discussed school safety plans and met with a local school Vice President who shared with us the Alabama Department of Education's individualized school safety plan format. After the seminar we summarized what we learning into a 15 word explanation. Mine reads as follows.
The basic need of safety must be met to create an environment of effective learning.
