Professional Development

Inner City Tutoring Program
11/5/12
2003, National Teacher of the Year, Dr. Rogers shared her passion for inner city schools during this seminar. Samford University offers opportunities for students to tutor in downtown Birmingham with partners built through the university  At this interest meeting Dr. Rogers shared her first hand experience with the important role education can play in a child's life. She worked for many years in inner city schools and has seen the impact first hand. While I think lots of professional development can be done by going to seminars or conferences, it is equally important to stay connected to the reason you are passionate about teaching, which for me, is transforming lives. Being involved in a tutoring program like the one Dr. Rogers was describing would be another wonderful way to partake in professional development.

ELL Seminar
11/19-20/12
While Trace Crossings was on Thanksgiving Break we attended an ELL seminar. The seminar provided us with resources on how to provide the best education to our ELL students. By outlining the needs, and struggles, and accommodations ELL students require and encounter, I was able to understand these students and their families better. The seminar lasted two days during which time we participated in brian storming, group work, lesson planning, research based best practice, and a variety of activities to help us feel better prepared for our future interactions with ELL families and students. I feel much more prepared having attended the seminar.

ARA Conference

11/16/12
This years ARA Conference was held in Huntsville, Alabama and so our class was able to attend. Although we were only preservice teachers, it was very informative to be around experienced teachers and take in their wisdom on how to encourage reading in our future classrooms. Each presenter had advice from their own experience, and since it was a conference for teachers, by teachers, each session was engaging, fun, informative, and easy to implement. I hope to attend conferences such as ARA even once I am a classroom teacher so I can learn from the best in my field and continue in my professional development.
